What was the first Smucker's® product?

In 1897, Jerome Monroe Smucker opened a small apple cider mill. He pressed apples harvested from his own trees and from neighboring orchards. Word of his cider spread, and Jerome began making apple butter from his grandfather's Pennsylvania Dutch recipe. Jerome's apple butter proved to be even more popular than his cider. In the 1920s, Smucker's line expanded to preserves, jams, and jellies.

Refrigeration is recommended. Under normal conditions, unopened products should remain of good quality until the expiry date. However, over time the flavour and color of products will decline.

Keeping the opened product refrigerated will discourage spoilage.

  • +

How long can I store a jar of your product?

It is the nature of packaged food products to experience some slight color and flavour degradation during extended storage. Products should be stored in cool temperatures (10° C to 15° C is preferable, but it should not exceed 24° C for extended periods) and should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Most of our fruit spreads and ice cream toppings have a shelf life of 24 months from the date of production. However, in order to obtain best color and flavour of our products, we do recommend consuming them within one year of the purchase date.

What exactly is a manufacturing code, and how do I read it?

The manufacturing code is the date the product was made. It might look something like this: 4 122 420 0321.

    • The first number represents the year it was made. For instance, the 4 in our example code means it was made in 2004. A number 3 would mean it was made in 2003, 2 in 2002, and so on.
    • The next three numbers represent the day of the year the product was made. In our example, the 122 (or one hundred and twenty second day) is May 2 (May 3 during Leap Year).
    • The third set of numbers or letters are plant codes, which have nothing to do with the date.
    • Finally, the last four digits represent the time displayed in military time.
    • We do, however, use multiple dating methods on our jams, so if your code looks different from this, please Contact Us.

    Are your products kosher?

All of our jams, jellies and marmalades have kosher certification with the "circle U" designation. All of our ice cream toppings are "circle UD" certified. Our current kosher certification is being done by The Orthodox Union in New York City.
